Overview

If you’re suffering from severe long-term leg pain, and even after taking lots of medicines, you're not getting results, then it’s time to consult an orthopedic surgeon and get your thorough checkup done. Your doctor may suggest lumbar microdiscectomy surgery to relieve your leg pain (sciatica). Here we’ve discussed the procedure in brief and the benefits that you will get if you do the same. Keep reading to learn more.

What is lumber microdiscectomy or microdecompression surgery?

Minimally invasive lumbar microdecompression (MLIM) surgery is used to treat spinal stenosis and herniated discs. During the treatment, bone spurs, thickened ligament tissue, and herniated disc material, i.e., putting pressure on the spinal nerves, are removed through a small incision with an 18mm tube (the diameter of a dime). MILM is a less invasive alternative to a typical "open" laminectomy.

  • The postoperative infection risk is reduced.

How is the surgery performed?

  • The back muscles (erector spinae) are pulled from each vertebra's bony arch.
  • Because back muscles run vertically, they can be shifted out of the way rather than cut.
  • Your surgeon will be able to penetrate the spine by removing the membrane covering the nerve root.
  • The ligamentum flavum is the name given to this membrane. To gain access to the nerve root, a tiny part of the inner facet is removed. This will also help to reduce the strain on the nerve roots.
  • The nerve root is gently shifted to the side. The herniated disc debris, which is trapped under the nerve root, is carefully removed.
  • The healthy part is left alone.
  • The strain on the nerve root has now been relieved, and it has adequate space to heal.

Will the pain be relieved immediately following surgery?

The nerve root may take several months or weeks to fully recover and regrow. However, the patient may experience instant relief following the lumbar discectomy surgery.

Home care instructions you need to follow for microdecompression surgery:

  • There shouldn’t be physically demanding activities, such as yard labor or heavy housekeeping.
  • Driving should be avoided for the first couple of days, as well as when using pain medicines or muscle relaxants. If your pain is under control, you can drive.
  • Do not consume alcoholic beverages. It thins the blood and increases your risk of bleeding. Also, do not mix alcohol with pain medicines.
  • It is not a good idea to bend or twist your back during your recovery period.
