Fontan surgery procedure
Generally, during the Fontan procedure, the cardiac surgeon first detaches the inferior vena cava which is the main vein that brings deoxygenated blood from the body to the heart that further goes to the right atrium.
After that, the vein is attached to the pulmonary artery that carries blood from the heart to the lungs where oxygenation of the blood takes place. Then a synthetic tube or intra-atrial baffle is used in order to make a connection so that the blood can normally enter the heart through the Vena cava to the lungs.
Now, the surgeon creates a small opening between the right atrium and the baffle so that some of the blood can return to the heart to avoid overloading in the lungs. The hole is later on closed after the lungs get used to the increased amount of blood flow.
Fontan surgery survival rate
Though Fontan surgery is a complicated procedure still it is one of the most effective solutions for treating congenital heart defects such as tricuspid atresia, double outlet right ventricle, hypoplastic left heart syndrome, etc. According to various research and data, it is seen that the success rate of Fontan surgery ranges from 80 to 90%, and individuals going through the surgery are able to live longer.
