How is the procedure performed?

The sigmoidoscopy procedure begins with the doctor instructing patients to lie down on their left side with their knees drawn to their chest. The doctor will then insert a lubricated glove into the patient's rectum to check for blockages by gently enlarging the anus.

A sigmoidoscope will also be inserted through the patient's anus. Because it is flexible, the sigmoidoscope can easily pass through the anus. At the tip of this scope, there is a camera and a light. The scope will then be moved gently to the patient's colon, and air will be inserted to enlarge this region. This allows for a better view. Passing air may result in the desire to pass gas or have a bowel movement.

Is it painful to have a sigmoidoscopy?

After undergoing the procedure, you may experience some discomfort, but no pain. You will most likely not be sedated, but your doctor may administer medication to help you relax and fall asleep.

Inform your doctor if you begin to experience pain at any time. They can adjust the tube to make you more comfortable.

When should you seek medical help?

If you have any of the following symptoms after sigmoidoscopy, you should contact your doctor:

  • Bloody bowel movements or heavy rectal bleeding.
  • Weakness or dizziness
  • Abdominal pain is unbearable.
  • Infection symptoms, such as fever or chills
