Causes | The definite cause of lung carcinoid tumours is still a mystery. As per researchers, they are not caused due to smoking or other chemicals and pollutants. However, they predominantly develop in whites than in other races, and the latter are more prone to develop a lung carcinoid tumour among men and women. Another factor that increases the risk of having this tumour is an inherited syndrome known as Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1. | Tobacco smoking, Marijuana smoking, or electronic cigarettes increase the risk of developing NSCLC. Regular exposure to smoke of tobacco also increases the risk. People working with asbestos often tend to breathe the asbestos fibres, which contain dangerous elements, expanding the development of NSCLC. Air pollution and radon are also some of the causes of NSCLC. However, apart from these causes, if someone has a genetic predisposition to lung cancer, they will have a greater chance of developing NSCLC even if they don't associate themselves with the aforementioned causes. |
Symptoms | They don't show a lot of symptoms. For around 25% of people, the tumour is caught when they take tests for other diseases. However, sometimes it causes symptoms such as coughing blood, wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest pain. | In some cases, people diagnosed with NSCLC do not show any signs or symptoms related to the disease. Some common NSCLC symptoms are fatigue, shortness of breath, loss of appetite, hoarseness, coughing up blood, and weight gain. |
Treatments | Surgery is sometimes followed by chemotherapy and radiation if the tumour is operable. If surgery is not an option, the diagnosed individual can receive targeted therapy or participate in a clinical trial. | The treatment of NSCLC mainly comprises five ways which are surgery, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. If the cancer is in an operable condition, then the initial choice of the doctors and oncologists associated with the case is surgery, sometimes followed by chemotherapy. However, if it is inoperable due to its location and stage, the only options are targeted therapy, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and immunotherapy. Each of them has specific amounts of side effects but tends to show positive results in most cases. |
Conclusion
In conclusion, both cancers are equally dangerous to human health, and if not treated at the right time, they may result in severe problems or even death. Therefore, always make sure to take proper care of your health and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
