Understanding Lazy Eye and Its Diagnosis & Treatment
16 Aug, 2022
Overview
Proper growth of the eyes is important for having clear vision. But all people don’t have it as most of them suffer from one such condition called "lazy eye." It’s a condition when one of your eyes doesn’t develop the way it should. The brain focuses on one eye more than the other. However, the term "lazy eye" is misleading, as the problem lies in the nerve connecting the eye to the brain, not in the eye itself. Identifying and treating the condition can be hard sometimes, but can be treated completely if done at an early age. Here we’ve covered various lazy eye treatments and some facts related to the condition.

What can cause a lazy eye?
Doctors might not always understand exactly what’s causing lazy eyes or amblyopia. Our experts from the best hospital in India have helped us to explore various reasons that can cause lazy eyes.
- Refractive errors: One eye may be much more focused than the other. The opposite eye may be nearsighted or farsighted. It could also have astigmatism (distorted or blurry vision). When your brain receives both a blurry and a clear image, it begins to ignore the blurry one. If this continues for months or years, the blurred eye's vision will deteriorate.
- Strabismus: This occurs when your eyes do not line up properly. One could enter or exit. Strabismus patients can't focus their eyes together on an image, so they frequently see double. Your brain will ignore the image from the misaligned eye.
- Saggy eyelid: A saggy or droopy eyelid can block vision.
- Cataracts: A cloudy lens within your eye can cause things to appear blurry.

Diagnosing lazy eye:
Ophthalmologists diagnose amblyopia by looking for differences in vision between the two eyes. To evaluate a baby's or young child's vision, an ophthalmologist may cover one of the child's eyes and observe how well the child can follow a moving object. The doctor may also observe how the child reacts when one of his or her eyes is covered. If a child has amblyopia in one eye and the other is covered by a patch, he or she may try to look above or below the patch, pull it off, or cry.
The ophthalmologist will perform a comprehensive medical eye exam to look for any other eye problems that may be affecting vision.
A child's poor vision in one eye does not always indicate amblyopia. In some cases, wearing glasses to correct a refractive error in one's vision is necessary.
What are the treatment options available for lazy eyes?
Treatment options are determined by the cause of lazy eye and the extent to which the condition impairs your child's vision. Your doctor may advise you to:

- Corrective lenses: Glasses or contact lenses can correct lazy eye problems caused by nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism.
- Patches for the eyes: Your child wears an eye patch over the eye with better vision for two to six hours or more per day to stimulate the weaker eye. In rare cases, wearing an eye patch for an extended period of time can cause amblyopia in the patched eye. It is, however, usually reversible.
- Eyedrops: An eyedrop of atropine (Isopto Atropine) medication can temporarily blur vision in the stronger eye. The drops are typically prescribed for use on weekends or on a daily basis, and their use encourages
- Surgery: If your child has droopy eyelids or cataracts that cause deprivation amblyopia, surgery may be required. If even with the proper glasses, your child's eyes continue to cross or wander apart, your doctor may recommend surgical repair to straighten the eyes, in addition to other lazy eye treatments.
There are activity-based treatments available, such as drawing, puzzles, and computer games. The effectiveness of combining these activities with other therapies has yet to be established.
Proper treatment improves vision in most children with lazy eyes within weeks to months. Treatment could last anywhere from six months to two years.
