Getting Familiar with the Complications of Cranioplasty Surgery
09 Aug, 2022
Overview
Cranioplasty is a surgical procedure used to correct defects in the skull. This can improve the overall appearance of the skull and has some medical benefits as well. This will strengthen the problem areas of your brain and provide extra protection for those parts of your brain. However, like every surgery, cranioplasty also has some side effects associated with it. Though they’re rare, you can’t neglect those complications completely.
We’ve covered such complications in this article to help you and your surgeon make an informed choice.

What are the risks associated with cranioplasty?
The following are the risks or complications associated with cranioplasty that you can count on. However, cranioplasty has a higher complication rate than other elective neurosurgical procedures. Age, functional status, and early surgery (85 days) are all independent risk factors for complications. As per neurosurgery experts, intracranial pressure is one such factor that you need to consider before surgery. In such cases, your surgeon will guide you accordingly.
- infection: an 8% chance
- Hemorrhage: beneath the cranioplasty flap (epidural or subdural)
- Convulsions or seizures
- brain damage
- Hydrocephalus
- Stroke
- Clot developed in legs
- Pneumonia
- Urinary infection
- Heart attack
But choosing an experienced surgeon who has performed this procedure numerous times can reduce the likelihood of developing a complication after a cranioplasty.

How would it feel to recover from cranioplasty?
Head operations are rarely painful, but you may experience a headache and be given pain reliever pills and injections to keep you comfortable. You may still have a urinary catheter in place as a result of the surgery.
Your nurse will remove the IV drip from your arm within the next few days, and you will be encouraged to walk. You will gradually be able to move around normally. On the second day following surgery, your head bandage will be removed.
Most cranioplasty patients are hospitalized for two to three days following surgery. When your care team determines that you are able to move around, shower, and dress, you will have another CT scan of your head. If the surgical site appears to be in good condition, you will be released and allowed to go home.
