Types of Thalassemia

There are two basic types of thalassemia

Alpha thalassemia occurs when the body is unable to make Alpha globin; the production of which requires four genes, two from each parent. And if any of the copies of the Alpha gene is abnormal then one can be a carrier but if a person has 2 or more copies of the abnormal alpha gene then they might suffer from mild or severe alpha thalassemia. Children born with four abnormal copies of the Alpha gene do not survive as they are still held.

Beta thalassemia occurs when the bodies are unable to produce beta globin. Similarly, these are also inherited from each parent, and abnormality of either gene might cause thalassemia. It is caused when the beta globin genes are missing or affected; it is a dangerous form of thalassemia. Individuals suffering from it might notice symptoms such as failure to thrive, poor appetite, enlarged organs, fussiness, frequent infections, jaundice etc.

Causes of thalassemia

Thalassemia is basically caused due to inheritance of faulty genes that affect the production of normal hemoglobin. Children that inherit abnormal gene copies or have a missing gene copy of Alpha or beta globin usually suffer from thalassemia. If a parent is a carrier of Thalassemia then the child may suffer from Thalassemia minor but if both the parents are carriers or infected then the child is likely to suffer from Thalassemia major.

Can thalassemia be cured?

Thalassemia can be cured with the help of stem cells from bone marrow transplants. The stem cell is capable of forming new cells of the desired function. Stem cell therapy and the bone marrow cells have the ability to develop into different types of blood cells. In cases where the person is unable to synthesize healthy hemoglobin cells in such cases, a bone marrow transplant is adopted in order to replace the affected cells of thalassemia.

This type of treatment is quite intensive and carries a various number of complications along with it. The primary risk is whether the body will accept the foreign bone marrow or not because in cases where the body rejects it, then it creates life-threatening conditions as the immune system starts attacking the cells.

If one asks if thalassemia can be cured completely, then the answer is that the cure can be done with the help of regular blood transfusion or bone marrow transplantation. But the chances of cure totally depend upon person to person and how well their body adapts to the treatment.
